George Carlin Over parenting
June 9th, 2010
George Carlin 70 years old but still as quick witted as ever. I found this particular talk about over parenting very true and something that all parents should watch and give thought to – as a parent myself I have seen this at the soccer field and in the attitudes of the teachers at my children’s schools. It’s sickening, what’s worse is that they’re are not creating good children who will grow to be psychologically healthy adults they create pint-sized emperors with egos the size of Cathedrals and when these adult brats discover they have no empire and they are not rock stars or famous actors or even smart they’re devastated and the next step is a rifle and a tower.

Little thing called high school. I wish he talked more about it, because he seems to be acting as if kids go from elementary schools and feeling “special” to being thrown into a job.

@RadioHyperactive Fuck getting hurt. It builds character. When I was little, I got a ball kicked directly in my face twice in a row by the biggest kid in class. TWICE IN A ROW.
Okay, so I cried. What the fuck do you want me to do? D;

@DaHonestAbe I was born here and in the 1960′s went through similar upbringing. But 10 PM!! you had it good. I had to be in bed by 8:30 until I turned 13. Then I could stay up till 9 PM. In the summer I could stay up a bit later…only problem, I’d get sleepy around 8:45 lol!! I too turned out a decent human being. I appreciate the discipline now that I’m older. They may have been a bit overprotective…but I knew I was loved, as I’m sure you were too. That’s what really matters. Take care.

My parents immigrated here in 84 and I was born shortly after. Not being from here, they were fearful and FAR too overprotective. I lived in a townhouse complex where I couldn’t leave outside the border complex. Even when we moved to our first house, I had a curfew of 10pm in the damn summer. I had to build my own character. I luckily grew into a decent human being.

The only thing worst than parents who do absolutely nothing are parents who do absolutely WAY TOO MUCH for their children. My parents were pretty protective, but they allowed me to play tag, cowboys and indians, dodge ball, fireworks (with proper supervision, of course), and yes, even a stick (to “dig a fuckin’ hole”)! If you safe-proof every aspect of their lives, they won’t know or learn how to really deal with the real world as they become adults. They’ll grow up to be wimps (or idiots).

I legitimately cried when Carlin died. I won’t go so far as to call him the best modern day prophet we’ve had in our lifetimes (he is), but he was easily the best comedian. He is sorely missed.
RadioHyperactive said:
they banned dodge ball in my elementary school (when i went there) because kids would “Get hurt”. Which is untrue and anyone who supports that deserves to be punched in the face.

this totally reminds me of this kid in one of my classes who always tells me that he cant watch any PG-13 movies, and he’s 16, but he’s allowed to go to public school

And we wonder why Generation Y is so lazy. Could it be the previous generation “playing” mommy and daddy?

People have confused correlation with causation; high self-esteem does not produce good grades……it’s the other way around: good grades produce high self-esteem.

Is it that this type of parent plagues this country, or is this universal? It showcases how pathetic we entitled Americans are. This attitude is so prevalent in education, and it is evident in the way we have slid way down the tubes as far as our education system vis a vis other countries. Who can we trust to hear the truth, now that Carlin is gone?

I have never agreed with anybody else more in my life. He makes perfect sense, he may be blunt, but he sure as hell is smart and puts logic behind his theories.
