In previous articles I have discussed parenting should come from the heart and not from a book, how it also requires keen observation and intellect. What more could I possibly say? There are other phenomena regarding parenting that involves laziness. When children get older the parents become more lax in their parenting interventions and observational skills.

When the baby is first brought home from the hospital, the parents are on their guard and ready for anything. Their life is diapers and powder, formula and bottles, blankets and bibs. After five years of this, coupled with potty training, big girl beds and transitions to solid food, the parent will stop thinking with their hearts and making keen observations; they start thinking that they are doing a really good job and start resting on their laurels. After all, they deserve a break, right? While the parent is busy resting, the child continues to grow and develop. Sometimes the relaxed parent will not detect the subtle changes to the child and wonder why their habits have changed.

The vigilant parent will detect all the subtle changes the child makes. Things like whether she likes mangoes and not peas or peas and not mangoes, or the fact that she is now fussier because she is teething. These things are easy to detect if you are actively involved with the child but not if you are distant.

It is a good thing not to let other things distract you as a parent so that the most of your full attention will be placed on the child. As she will soon be going to school, her childhood days are nearing an end; you should probably not let these precious times go too quickly. The strange part is that she will want more privacy as she gets older, but will need your guidance and parenting more than anything.

Parenting is not an easy task. It is no wonder why people put off having kids for so long and a wonder that people actually do. It is a job that takes bravery and a type of fortitude that is relatively rare among most parents.
