Successful Single Parenting
January 6th, 2010Being a single parent is a difficult thing, because you don’t have anyone to share the responsibility or workload with. Although parenting is designed to be a team effort (with a mother and father), there are many situations that merit a single parent. Our ever-changing world and society has shown that there are many successful single parents out there, here are a few tips to help you in your single parenting:
The main step that you need to take is to be organized and manage your time and resources. Set up a good system that works for your and yours family. Coordinate your calendars that you can be sure that your work schedule fits in with the school appointments, doctors visits, household work, meal planning, errand running, and any other extra curricular activities that your family may be involved in. It takes some time and effort to stay organized, but a good system will definitely lower your stress levels in the long run.
All parents (whether they are single or not) need to be sure that they are committed to their family. This means that you will take responsibility for the situation that you are in, and do the best you can to make things work. Don’t blame other people for your failures, own up to your responsibilities and keep your family at the top of your priority list.
If you have the resources, you may consider hiring someone to help with tasks around the house. Having someone come in once a week to do the deep cleaning can really make a difference, because it may free up your time so that you can enjoy your children more. Don’t be shy to ask for help from friends or family, find other single parents in the area that want to work together and coordinate play dates or dinner swaps.
Single parenting is hard, but working with the resources that you have will help you to be more successful in the long run. Make the best of your situation and love the time that you have to spend with your children!
