Are you monitoring your childs internet usage?

As the father of two, I was very concerned about my children view inappropriate content on the internet whether it was accidental or on purpose. I looked into several products that would help me perform internet monitoring while still giving them the freedom to surf around on the internet. I thought I had a good grasp on things only to find out I had missed the boat! While I was monitoring the websites, filtering out the bad ones, and approving / rejecting the ones in question, I completely missed the method both of them use more than any other.

Instant Messaging

I read an article that really opened my eyes about children on the internet today. The article gave some numbers of what children were doing on the internet today and what types of traffic they usually went to on the internet. I want to share a couple of those statistics with you that really made me start looking for something to help me better protect my children:

  • There are an estimated 55 million children that use the internet today. 75% of the time they spend online they are utilizing instant messaging.
  • 1 in 5 of those children where sexually solicited online
  • Only 18% of the most serious incidents were actually reported.

I wasn’t even monitoring instant messaging and this really scared me. I use instant messaging at work on a daily basis and always thought that once you close the window, your IM’s (Instant Messages) were gone and could not be traced. I was glad to find out some internet monitoring products allow you to view the IM logs which was good, but I really wanted to play the “big brother” role if I wanted to.
