Habits – Makers Or Breakers
June 10th, 2009Habits can be said to be routines of behaviors, which is a repetition of a particular behavior regularly, and tends to occur subconsciously without directly thinking about them.
A man’s life can be said to be what it is by virtue of the habits that he has formed. There are several types of habits, major ones including:
• Bodily habits – such as brushing our teeth early in the morning.
• Habits of thought – criticizing or contradicting others, some indulge in puns, while some are always content to accept uncritically the opinions of others.
• Habits of will – some people finish whatever they undertake, while others readily admit defeat.
Bad habits can be broken by method of elimination by substitution, whereby the bad habit is replaced by a corresponding good habit.
To form a habit, the first essential is determination.
The end to be achieved must be imagined and strongly desired, and a resolution must be made to work for the achievement of that end.
The next essential is constant practice and a refusal to accept any exception. One exception leads to another and finally breaks down the resolution.
Each victory won, renders another one easier to win. We should learn to always do things correctly.
Childhood is where we learn most of our habits, since old horses may not be able to learn new tricks. It is pertinent therefore, to take note of what our children learn at school, unacceptable behaviors should be quickly treated and discarded and healthy ones upheld. These behaviors form habits which make up their lives.
Habits are at first cobwebs, at last cables.
