Is Austim Curable? Posted By : Wendy Greif
April 14th, 2009Previously I wrote an article giving a brief explanation of Autism. In this article I referenced several different view points from various medical and research facilities. According to their information Autism is considered incurable.
Since writing that article (A Brief Explanation of Autism), I have been doing a considerable amount of research and I have come to the conclusion that the medical community and these various other research facilities may be wrong.
The Autism Society of America states on their web pages, “While there is no known cure for autism, there are treatment and education approaches that may reduce some of the challenges associated with the condition. Intervention may help to lessen disruptive behaviors, and education can teach self-help skills that allow for greater independence. But just as there is no one symptom or behavior that identifies individuals with ASD, there is no single treatment that will be effective for all people on the spectrum. Individuals can learn to function within the confines of ASD and use the positive aspects of their condition to their benefit, but treatment must begin as early as possible and be tailored to the child’s unique strengths, weaknesses and needs.”
Jenny McCarthy claims she helped her son, Evan, recover from autism. She tells Usmagazine.com that by giving her son a strict no wheat-and-dairy-free diet, she says her son has recovered and no longer shows the major signs of autism.
There is an organization out there that seems to have found a way into the mind of the autistic child. They do not claim that they have found a cure for autism, but instead they help parents and caregivers to enter the autistic child’s world. Through this they are able to make a connection with the child and to slowly bring them into our world. This organization is based in Sheffield, MA. It was started in 1974 by Barry and Samahria Kaufman. They had a child who was diagnosed with severe autism and basically they were told there was no hope. Unwilling to believe the medical profession, they spent several years working with their son and discovering his world. Through their patience and assistance, their son Raun found his way into our world. Raun is now a grown man and the CEO of Autism Treatment Center of America: The Son-Rise Program. The very organization his parents founded in 1974.
I requested the free material they offer on the Son-Rise program. It has two DVDs detailing several different families who have taken their autistic children through the program. There is quite a bit of reading material included in the information, as well. I also called and spoke with one of their knowledgeable counselors about the program they offer. I must say, that I was quite impressed. So impressed, that I spoke with several of my teaching friends who work with autistic children. Like myself, they had never heard of the Autism Treatment Center of America. I lent the information I received to them and they felt the same as I did after viewing the DVDs and reading the information. If this program does indeed reach a child who is considered unreachable, then it is well worth the financial investment and the time.
I encourage those parents who have been looking for someway to help their autistic child to contact this organization and request the free packet of information. Decide for yourself if you think you are willing to do whatever it takes to help your child. They make no promises, but I do believe that they have found a way to help autistic children. You can find them on the web either their name Autism Treatment Center of America or The Son-Rise Program.
