How to Teach Your Kids to Pack For a Trip
January 8th, 2009Going on trips is fun especially when you are bringing the entire family. However, this can be tough if you have kids. You have to consider them every time you make a decision. You have to make sure that that the experience will be fun for them as well.
You can lessen the burden if you give your kids certain responsibilities. One of the things you should entrust to them is to pack their things for the trip. Although you still need to monitor them, assigning them this task will teach them to take responsibility of their stuff in your ensuing trips.
Here are some tips to help you.
1. Give them a checklist. The children should know what to pack. If you let your child pack whatever she wants, she might bring all her five girls’ cowboy boots. Make sure that you specify what the children need. Like the number of shirts, pants, shorts, under wears, and towels. If they insist on bringing a toy, let them pick one, which is easy to pack.
2. Tell them to arrange the things found in the checklist on their bed. This will allow you to check the items yourself. You cannot be too sure that your child understood the list. See to it that he has everything he needs on the trip. Check the things he placed on the bed and organize them. Teach him how to fold it properly and let him help you.
3. Check the items on their bed using the checklist you gave them. After arranging his things, cross check it with the items on the list. Teach him how to do it as well. If he is missing some items, ask him to bring it to the bed. If he has more than the items on the list, ask him to choose some of the things he will leave.
4. Supervise them as they place their things inside their respective bags. They should also learn how to arrange the items in their bags. They can do this with your help. Instruct them what to place first and where to place them. If they cannot arrange it properly, show them how. Children want to act like grownups sometimes. Most of the time, they will be more than willing to pack their things.
5. Make sure that they know where they place their things so that they can easily access it when they need it. This is the best way to keep their things organized. You can be sure that they will not find the five girls’ cowboy boots they wanted to bring. To do this, give the different compartments of their bag a name. Using your checklist, place the name of the compartment next to the item it contains. This makes it easier to find their things.
The trip will be much easier if your children take responsibilities of their things. Although this can be tough at the beginning, it will be very helpful in the future.
