Keeping Your Child in a Bubble
January 3rd, 2009It is important as parents that we realize the goal of our parenting. The goal is to take that little tiny baby and nurture it and care for it and help it grow into a healthy, happy, productive adult. For many parents they take the role of keeping their child safe during this process into a whole new realm.
Of course, we all know what it is like out in the world, and wish we could keep our children from it. But that is not reality. Keeping them from experiencing the world will only do more harm in the long run.
In order for a child to turn into an adult, they must be gradually given more space and more independence to grow and make their own choices, yes for good and for bad. Allowing your child to go through this process, may perhaps be one of the most difficult jobs of parenting.Â
There is not a specific method to doing this. Every child is different, so you will have to decide when to start letting go a little. You will need to be aware of mistakes and how to accept and learn from them. Don’t let your child have complete free reign, just small amounts of it. This will allow them to try out what you have taught them.
You both might just be surprised to see how often your child was listening, and watching, you. Hopefully they will put to use the tools you have given them.
