Adopting a Child – How to Prepare Yourself For a New Family Member
November 15th, 2008It is always a pleasant feeling having a child in the house. His or her cheekiness, laughter and hugs can bring a lot of happiness and warm into the family. However, not all married couples can have or want to have their own child and as such, the next best alternative that worth considering will be adopting a child.
If you have decided that adopting a child is the path you will be taking, then you have to be prepared to be persistence and patient. The process of adopting a child can take as long as two years. Studies have to be done on the adoptive parents to see if they are suitable to adopt a child. This home study is to find out if the adoptive parents after adopting a child, are financially stable to be able to provide for the adoptive child; to find out about the adoptive parents’ background like whether they have committed any crimes; to ensure that these adoptive parents are psychologically well prepared to take up the responsibilities as a new parents after adopting a child and many other areas. You have to clear the home study before you can proceed with the next step in adopting a child.
If you are preparing to adopt a baby, you will need a lot of patience as the process may even be longer. I would advise that you take this waiting time to learn and contemplate how you are going to be a loving father or mother after adopting a child. There is in fact no other ways but to constantly remind yourself that this is your very own child. You need to have a strong belief that it is the bond you are going to build with him or her that is of utmost important and not whether the child is conceived through natural means or adopted. This is critical when you decide adopting a child.
Parents, who are adopting a child while at the same time, having your own child at home, have to prepare to give them love equally. If you are thinking of pampering the adoptive child more, then you may have to prepare to face disastrous consequences. First of all, your own child who may feel left out can become greatly resented towards his or her adoptive sibling. Second, being specially treated, the adoptive child may become alienated and will not feel that sense of belonging to the family. Take your adoptive child in as part of the family and make sure you have your other family members and relatives to do the same. Anyway, your family members and relatives should give all their support to your decision in adopting a child.
Be prepared to face the challenges. No doubt the feeling of adopting a child of your own is great; it is not always a bed of roses. You may not notice it but a child can sometime be very sensitive to recognize the fact that you are not his or her biological parents especially when it comes to discipline. You may also start to see the difficulties in comforting the child and indeed, without that kind of love and patient, you may lose all hopes. Remember to constantly remind the child that you love him or her and cuddle him or her whenever possible.
Before adopting a child, make sure you find out the history of the child’s background. This is especially important to the adoptive child’s health. The child’s health conditions can be affected by the biological mother when she is conceiving him or her, health problems can also be inherited from the biological parents. To know and understand this is to prepare you for any illnesses that might surface in the future and to let you have the time and knowledge to do whatever to prevent it from happening.
You do see that it is not easy when adopting a child. There are a lot of preparations to be done before adopting a child. Nevertheless, adopting a child can be of great joy. Trust me, when you see your very own child, no matter natural or adopted, the happiness you experience will make you think that whatever hardship that you had gone through was simply peanuts.
