How Reading With Your Children Helps Them Become Better Readers
September 2nd, 2008In a poll called “Reading Across the Nation: A Chartbook,” conducted by the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities for the nonprofit Reach Out and Read National Center, as put forth in an article dated November 1, 2007, by the University of California, “the national average of parents that read to their children is 47.8%.” As if those statistics are not alarming enough, the article quotes Dr. Neal Halfon, director of the Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities as saying, “…states reporting the lowest rates of reading also report lower reading proficiency rates among their fourth-graders…” The poll focused on children from birth to age five. It also goes on to say that approximately one-third of American Children who enter kindergarten are, “…without the necessary language and literacy skills.”
