June 22nd, 2008Every parent is happy to see the new babysitter at their door, because it means that they are getting a (probably much-needed) night out! However, in your excitement, donÂ’t forget to give your babysitter much-needed information.
Here are some instructions that you should go over before leaving a new babysitter with your kids:
• Explain your childrenÂ’s normal routine and schedule. This includes mealtimes, bedtimes, snack times, etc…
• Explain each child’s limits. Instruct the sitter as to whether or not the children can use the TV, go on the computer or watch movies and which ones that you feel are appropriate.
• Leave a number where you can be reached. If you will be unreachable, leave the number of a neighbor or another responsible adult that the sitter can call in the case of emergency.
• Provide an emergency phone list. Your list should include your doctor’s number, and numbers of neighbors, friends, and relatives. Be sure your own phone number and address are on the list, so that in the event of an emergency, the babysitter will have that information to give to police or paramedics.
• Point out to the sitter where first-aid items are kept.
• Explain any allergies or medications. Instruct the sitter on how to give the medications and which products or foods cause allergic reactions in your children.
• Explain your expectations. If you prefer that the sitter not have visitors, not leave the house or use the phone, this should be discussed up front.
By preparing your new babysitter for everything through good instructions ahead of time, you can relax and enjoy your night out without worry or interruption.
