Toddler Behavior – Even The E. R. Doctor Could Not Believe This One!

The director of a program asked for help with a family in crisis involving a toddler. The child bit a peer so hard that the bleeding would not stop and emergency transport was required. The E.R. doctor examining the wound asked, “What dog did this?” He could not believe that a child could bite with that level of severity. Parents insisted that the child be expelled. So there I was surrounded by an angry mob of pre-school parents. Yet I kept asking myself, “Where would this child go from here? Who would offer her the kind of help her heart cry or “frizzamyers” called for? My resource list was substantial since I had been a legislative analyst with the county childcare coordinator’s office prior to graduation, not to mention being a Pediatric Health Educator for the hospital at the time. Or so I thought. From physicians, to my alumni, to the developmental psychiatric unit of Children’s Hospital, each call ended with the same response. “We do not work with children this young. Good luck!” So after crying and praying, here is what I did next, and what prompted me to create Pre-school and Family Life Coaching.
